Racking systems are designed to carry “Uniformly Distributed Loading” [this means that pallets should be located in the position indicated by the tick]. Loading other than this can be acceptable [Uneven Point Loading], but the manufacturer will need to be consulted to approve this.
Loading other than as defined can in certain instances put elements of the racking system under stress including the connection between the upright and the beam.

Unit Load Operating Clearances
To reduce the risk of damage and dislodgement to frames and parts, operating clearances between unit loads and the frames are to be maintained.
There shall be a minimum horizontal clearance of
- (a) 75mm between the unit load and the upright frame, and
- (b) 100mm between adjacent unit loads on a common beam pair.
The following minimum vertical clearance shall be maintained between the top of the unit load and the beam level above:
- (i) Where the equipment operator is at ground level and the top of the unit load is –
- (a) below 6-metre is height – 100mm; or
- (b) equal to or above 6-metre in height – 125mm
- (ii) Where the equipment operator is elevated to the storage level –100mm.

Vertical and horizontal clearance may be reduced in installations using automatic unit load handling equipment or equipment fitted with visibility aid devices.
