A number of simple rules should be observed when loading and unloading racking.
These include:
Unit Loads
Unit loads are to meet the following requirements:
- All pallets maintained in accordance with AS4068.
- Pallets placed onto beams using approved methods
- All goods stored on each pallet to be safely stacked andstable
- Double stacking of pallets not to be undertaken (includingthe top-most position) unless the system is specificallydesigned for such loading.
- Pallet loads themselves are to be suitable for double stacking and secured to prevent accidental dislodgement.
- Unit load dimensions (width, height, depth) shall bemaintained.
The criteria for the clearance of unit loads perimeter and spacing is dependent on the year of installation of the racking system. However, it is highly evident that maintaining adequate clearance reduces the risk of damage and dislodgement to frames, parts and stock.

AS 4084-1993 specifies clearances to be observed between the elements of the racking system and pallets.
- 75mm between the top of the pallet and the bottom of the beam level above
- 75mm between the pallet and the upright
- 100mm between the pallets
- 50mm flue clearance between double entry pallets
AS 4084-2012 specifies clearances to be observed between the elements of theracking system and pallets.
- 75mm between the top of the pallet and the bottom of the beam level above
- 75mm between the pallet andthe upright
- 100mm between the pallets
- 100mm fl ue clearance betweendouble entry pallets
AS4084.2-2023 specifies clearances to be observed between the elements of the racking system and pallets.
- 75mm between the unit loadand upright frame; and
- 100mm between adjacent unitloads on a common beam pair.
- 100mm fl ue clearance betweendouble entry pallets
Minimum vertical clearance shall bemaintained between the top of theunit load and the beam level above:
- Where the equipment operator is at ground level and the top of the unit load is –
- Below 6m in height – 100mm; or
- Equal to or above 6m in height– 125mm
- Where the equipment operator is elevated to the storage level– 100mm
Vertical and horizontal clearances may be reduced where automatic handling equipment or equipment fitted with visibility aid devices a reused to load the racking.
