Racking structures are set up in different ways, and we use specific terms to talk about the different parts of the setup.  These terms help us communicate clearly and effectively about the racking structures.

  • Bay – There area between upright frames
  • Run – A series of bays connected lengthwise
  • Single entry run – Single depth of a rack, normally accessible from one side only
  • Double entry run – Two runs build back to back
  • Bay levels – Number of storage levels in height per bay
  • Aisle – Space that allows direct access to the picking or loading areas within the racking structures
  • Passageway – An aisle in the racking structure that allows for the movement of transport but doesn’t provide direct access to the picking and loading areas
