Apart from the standard terms for racking layout designs, there is a variety of terms for the different types of racking structures. The main type used in South Africa is standard selective racking structures.

Standard selective racking structures

These racking structures can be easily adjusted or relocated. Full access to stock is given and can be designed to manage virtually any pallet size or weight. It is suitable for a wide range of application.

Double deep racking structures

Entry is from one side only and pallets can be stored two deep. This reduction in the number of aisles significantly boosts the amount of floor space. This system works on a first in last out principle.

Pallet live racking structures

Pallet live is a system with deep running racks that form lanes and two aisles at opposite ends. One aisle is for loading, and the other is for picking. This creates a rotation process ideal for storing and managing perishable goods.

Pushback racking structures

Push back racking structures functions similar to pallet live racking structures but only needs one working aisle instead of two. The structure features built-in rails or rollers that are slightly inclined and slop toward the picking face. This racking structure operates on the first-in, last-out (FILO) method.

VNA racking structures

VNA (very narrow aisle) racking structures does require very specialised forklifts, as the aisle width are to narrow and to high for standard forklifts to operate. Due to the limited space between the racks, VNA trucks function optimally in long, straight lines guided by rails or concealed wired guiding.

Drive-in racking structures

These racking structure types allows pallets to be stored across multiple rows on multiple levels. The pallets are stored in a systematic bottom to top, back to front sequence. Drive-in racking uses the same aisle for loading and picking.

Cantilever racking structures

Cantilever racking structures is designed specifically to support loads that are beyond the capacity of a standard pallet. It is a open-faced design, allowing long or particularly large loads to be placed directly onto the supporting arms, without any obstruction from frame or beams.

Shuttle racking structures

Shuttle racking structures is another type of deep storage system. Unlike drive-in racking the pallet is positioned onto a motorised shuttle at the entrance of the lane. It is then transported along the rail and placed in the ideal position on the racking structure.

Mobile racking structures

This system consists of traditional pallet racking mounted atop mobile bases equipped with wheels, enabling mobility. The bank of units remains closed and compact until the racking structure is moved for access.
